Throughout the “Disaster” series, Janssen wanted to resist the overflow of disaster images in the media, the way that devastation and despair was turned into a spectacle to be consumed by the public. In her work, urgency is emphasised instead by the meticulousness of craft and the choice of material. While real leather breathes and absorbs, the artificial leather used by Janssen repels stains. This is especially symbolic in “Untitled (Disaster III),” a memorial to oil spills. This artwork shows no margin between the land and the sea. The darkness that represents the toxic liquid, dominates and devours the landscape.
