At almost six feet, “Totem #1” is an imposing sculpture. Composed of two separate parts – one of blown glass; the other of Eastern black walnut—the totem-like structure invokes the human body, specifically the heart and the mind as the two inextricable parts of human identity. The sculpture’s materials honor the thousand-plus-year-old technique of glassblowing as well as the practice of making molds. In including materials and their respective processes, the piece “challenges the history of glass mold-blowing as a means for production, versus the handmade mold strictly for the one-of,” says Bianco.
