Theo Ruth’s Penguin Chair and the postage stamp have much in common. The penguin chair has been a design icon since the 1950s, while the postage stamp, on which it is an honour to be represented, is a form of iconography. Vermeulen’s textile design shows the stamp, without any embellishment, as a monochrome print. Juxtaposed with the strong lines of the Penguin Chair, its serrated edge stands supreme. By simplifying the design, Vermeulen honors the stamp— one of the most striking products of the printing industry—not for its content but for its form.
