Fashionable body is the starting point in Stéphanie Baechler’s work but as a form it is often absent. In “Pavillon de l’élégance” a porcelain arm, shrunk in the kiln, is all that remains. “Fashion has lost its functional relationship to the female body and exists as a folding and unfolding of the self. We are left with status, confidence and storytelling as ornaments of the self, and with the empty suggestion of a body beneath the folds,” says Beachler. Unfazed by the weight of expectation, she deconstructs the language of fashion and freezes it in the middle of movement.
