Originally designed for the sculpture “Automobile,” by Studio Job “L’Afrique Fabric” is made of pure cotton, measuring six yards in length. A wax block was used to achieve this pattern, which consists of traditional African iconography swallowed by a jungle of foliage. Roger Gerards, creative director of Vlisco, says “[Studio Job] search out the clichés in order to tell a story and, indirectly, we do that too, in order to get certain concepts across.” This iconography, however, is a dizzying distraction or disguise, hinted at by the colorful tribal masks in the forefront. Behind the masks, leaves and snakes is imagery uncolored and unclear. The effects is a patterned palimpsest, familiar and mysterious at the same time.
