A squashed spider on a seat; what’s left of it is nothing but a silhouette. Imagine the shock, when you find not one, but a swarm of spiders, earwigs, cockroaches. This is the motif that covers Theo Ruth’s Penguin Chair. The original from 1957 had a black back and a white cushioned front to mimic the animal after which it was named. In this version, Studio Job have, instead, paid tribute to critters. Studio Job first released their Insects in 2004 at no cost whatsoever. The pattern was used by fashion designers Viktor & Rolf in their 2004 fall/winter collection. Soon after, Insects infiltrated the Dutch domestic setting, appearing on a tile collection by Royal Tichelaar Makkum and on tea towels by the Dutch Textile Museum.
