The Mechelse Styrian is the seventeenth generation of new chicken species in the Cosmopolitan Chicken Project. It is the final transformation of the youngest of species, born in 2013 from the interbreeding of the Mechelse Senegal and the Slovenian Styrian Hen. Like the generations before it, the Mechelse Styrian is immortalized as art after its death. “Forever” displays the chicken’s ashen remains in a transparent urn. For this exclusive version, the stand was cast in bronze by Studio Job. Suspended from a hook, the urn, looks more like a vase. Glass suggests that this is not a burial urn, but one of resurrection. As the project continues, in anticipation of the eighteenth generation, Koen van Mechelen’s chickens become increasingly resistant.
