“Fish Box Cart NY” is an example of how memories, personal and sentimental, develop into design. As young boys, Martens and Veluw built soapbox carts, each consisting of no more than an old baby stroller frame with a couple of planks on top. The “Fish Box Cart” displays novelty without sacrificing memory. A standard fish crate is used for the base due to its industrial character and defiant form. Still, each crate wears surface scuffs from past open-sea travels. Most importantly, “Fish Box Cart” reminds us of the titillations of craft, of making all kinds of things with your own hands as a child. It represents the designers’ determination to return to even the earliest designs.
