“DPDR” furthers Tom Hancocks’ interest in the boundary between physical and digital by exploring new ways to represent digitally-designed furniture. The works is intended to analyze the spectrum of value in furniture design: from comfort and function, to sculpture and aesthetics. I“t is reflecting an internal conflict as a designer over what truly informs design,” says Hancocks. “DPDR” shows a metal and leather lounge chair, a category of furniture intended almost entirely for comfort, that has also been highly aestheticized with shiny materials, this digital design has then been printed and cut-out, therefore removing any true function, and placing itself at the extreme end of purely visual experience.
