“Di Antonia” is part of a series entitled “The Odd Company,” a continuation of brightly colored ceramic grotesques for which Han van Wetering is known. Their orgiastic bodies are inspired by those found in baroque sculptures, which the artist simultaneously parodies. Van Wetering’s bestial and monstrous characters are far from saints. This goblin has a green face. Like a creature of the underworld, its body oozes like lava. With its head bent, it tries to look up at the only speck of blue sky, and seems to be both falling and fallen.
