This set of eight lacquered wooden cubes, by ADO, is an early example of modular or architectural toys, which have become so commonplace with companies like LEGO. Until the 1950s, when ADO produced the cube set, LEGO had long made traditional cube-shaped wooden blocks at a small workshop in Denmark. While LEGO’s bricks would interlock, ADO’s cubes fit, one inside the other, like a minimal Russian matryoshka. The smallest cube, the only dark color in the set, features the metal ADO logo.
