While the years after World War I were not the most productive of his life, he came to the realization of his own personal method of expression, during this period, by which he would be remembered. “Koe bij hoeve-Valavond,” a painting by Smits of Achterbos, translates into English as “Cow at Farmhouse, Early Evening.” The canvas is covered with heavy layers of granular texture. The attention to color illustrates his obsession with depicting vibrant light. In 1922, the same year he finished this painting, the artist wrote in a letter to Ernest Van den Bosch, “My humble work, symbolic, poetic, genuine.”
