This portrait of a village boy in a blue shirt was painted in the last few years of Smits’ life. As one of his simplest paintings, it is also his most contemporary. “The work speaks for itself,” says Job. The flatness of the profile is juxtaposed with the impasto—the thick application of paint—in the background. Inspired by the painting’s rough surface, Studio Job have replicated Smits’ technique for the frame. The frames of the three paintings, all originals, have been overhauled by Studio Job. In this particular example, the dark blue color of the frame has been selected from the painting, while Studio Job’s trademark gold is used to emphasize the boy’s complexion.
