Originally commissioned by the Neopolitan foundation Plart, the Botanica collection, made only of natural polymers, is designed as if the oil-based era in which we live never took place. The materials researched by Formafantasma—such as rosin, dammar, copal, shellac—are all extracted from plants or animal derivatives. This vessel is made from natural shellac, caolin and woodpowder. It has an extraneous layer, like a wing or a petal. Formafantasma discovered unexpected textures through their research, which they explored further in the design process. Other pieces in the collections are similarly made up of different layers and peeling skins. Since these material were previously obscured by mass production, it is as if they are finally revealing themselves.
