ADAM/ADAM-EVE/EVE” is a wearable statement, a response to the homophobia prevalent today, that Kooistra believes to be growing. The tea towel, manufactured by the Dutch Textile Museum, features a variation of the rainbow colored flag that represents the LGBT movement. Kooistra stresses an interaction between the colors unseen in the original: the stripes appear as if painted on, with the paint still dripping, overlapping each other. The first rainbow flag was designed by a San Francisco artist, Gilbert Baker, in 1978. Meant to have eight stripes, including pink and turquoise, the original flag was actually incomplete. Kooistra’s towel, too, seems to be unfinished. The fabric is left white at the bottom as though to symbolize ongoing discrimination and the many rights still to be achieved.
