Born in the Netherlands, Tord Boontje studied industrial design at Eindhoven Design Academy and the Royal College of Art, London. Founded in 1996, Studio Tord Boontje makes furniture, textiles, installation and graphics. From free utilitarian glassware to a Swarovski crystal chandelier, all Boontje’s designs reference contemporary craft. Even when mass-producing items for Habitat or Target, the Studio has always drawn from the belief that modernism does not mean minimalism, that contemporary does not forsake tradition, and that technology does not abandon people and the senses. Boontje developed his interest in social issues by running workshops and working with artisans in developing countries. He returned to London in 2009 as Head of Design Products at the RCA. In 2012, he combined his studio, workshop and retail outlet in one location in East London.
