Dutch industrial designer Piet Hein Eek, who graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 1967, believes that what is integral to beautiful design and a successful career is a stimulating environment that makes you feel like a fish in water. Hein Eek started his company with business partner Nob Ruijgrok. In his words: ‘We started by creating a fishbowl…and have since moved up to an aquarium’. The company has always tried to be involved in different activities. The site in Eindhoven accommodates wood, steel, upholstery, assembly, spraying and ceramics workshops, as well as studios, a shop, gallery, restaurant and showroom. This is a way of making the maximum of circumstance, which is also their design ethos. All collections are produced under ‘Eek en Ruijgrok B.V.’, while self-initiated work is made by ‘Piet Hein Eek’.
