In early summer 2011, Niels Wildenberg (1969) called Bob Copray (1968) with an idea to make a classic indoor lounger from 1956 in one material and color for the outdoors. Copray, who was one of the first employees at Piet Hein Eek in the early 90s, had already co-founded the label Copray & Sholten and the platform ‘Dutch Individuals’. Wildenberg’s creative career began in the Netherlands graffiti scene. After changing to fashion, he set up his own successful brand of Italian neckties and running his family’s high-end fashion retail business. Mal was founded by Copray and Wildenberg in 2012 in Eindhoven, ‘mal’ meaning ‘mold’ but also silly or a little bit crazy. The Mal 1956 from 2011, was launched as a pop-up in the streets of Milan during the Salone di Mobili in April 2012.
