Founded in 1902 by Louis Maharam, a Russian immigrant, Maharam has evolved over several generations from a modest supplier of fabric to a renowned source of theatrical textiles for costume and set design, and on to a pioneer of performance- driven textiles for commercial interiors. Today, as vanguard of North American textiles, Maharam embraces a range of disciplines from product, graphic and digital design to art and architecture, collaborating with avant-garde designers such as Hella Jongerius, Paul Smith and Konstantic Grcic. The studio balances an appreciation of history (with initiatives like the “Textiles of the 20th century”) with aesthetic and industrial innovation. Maharam Digital Projects and the Maharam STEAM Fellowship in Applied Art and Design, for which they received the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum Design Patron Award, extend the interest in making interior textiles interdisciplinary.
