Dutch designer Maarten Baas was born in Arnsberg, Germany. He moved to the Netherlands in 1979, where he lives near ’s-Hertogenbosch. Baas attended the Design Academy Eindhoven until 2002. During this time he spent several months at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and his candleholder, “Knuckle,” was produced by Pols’ Potten. Baas graduated with the Smoke furniture series that he expanded for the Gramercy Park Hotel with Ian Schrager’s design team in 2005. That year, Baas founded Studio Baas & den Herder with Bas den Herder, who is now responsible for the production and development of almost all of Maarten Baas’s designs. Baas was the youngest designer ever awarded Designer of the Year during the 2009 Design Miami, with a solo exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris two years later.
