Belgian conceptual artist Koen Vanmechelen is internationally renowned for his ability to harness art and science. Over the past decade, Vanmechelen has collaborated with scientists to produce a plethora of work—from painting, sculpture and glass to video and installation using innovative 3D techniques. His research culminates in exhibitions across the world, appearing at Biennials of Moscow, Dakar and Poznan, at the World Expo Shanghai 2010, the Triennial of Guangzhou, Manifesta 9 and dOCUMENTA (13). His work on biocultural diversity and identity earned him an honorary doctorate at the University of Hasselt in 2010, and the Golden Nica Hybrid Art in 2013. Central to this work are animals, specifically chickens, which he uses as a metaphor to reflect on “la condition humaine.” He is presently based in Hasselt, Belgium.
