Ian Stell - Featured Artists

Ian Stell (New York City, b. 1967) is both a painter and an engineer. With a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, Stell developed his design practice based on the idea that form, structure, or system comes first, and a focus on media and fabrication follows. In his designs he often invokes principles from the world of fabrics. “I think about textile a lot, as a physical animated structure, but also as an idea,” he says. “The ordered tangling of warp and weft, x and y axes that stretch on the bias and billow off the plane; a matrix of voices.”
