Gijs Bakker from Amersfoort in Netherlands, was trained as a jewellery and industrial-designer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and the Konstfack Skolen in Stockholm. Based in Amsterdam, Bakker designs jewellery, home accessories and household appliances, furniture, interiors, public spaces and exhibitions. In 1993, he founded Droog Design with design critic and historian Renny Ramakers, where Bakker was selector and art director of all products until 2009. Bakker often works in collaboration to create and evolve conceptual design. For Chp…?, established in 1996 as Chi ha paura…? (Italian for Who’s afraid of…?) with Marjke Vallanzasca, Bakker invites known designers to contribute a special piece for its jewellery collection, paying particular attention to concept. Bakker has taught at different schools and was Head of the Masters Programme at the Design Academy Eindhoven between 2000-2012.
