Esther Janssen is a painter without paint. Her specialty is using leather to create meticulously crafted, hand-sewn paintings of place. She prefers patent leather, a non-breathable fabric that fits with her representations of cultivated but often stifled environments.
From 1995-2000 Janssen studied at The Design Academy in Eindhoven. Janssen’s first international solo exhibition was in 2008 in Florence, Italy. In 2012, the Dutch artist had her first solo retrospective at Gemeentemuseum Helmond, the Netherlands. Her work has been represented by Cokkie Snoei gallery in various exhibitions and international Art Fairs. She received a total of three grants from the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture. Janssen is also an art teacher at the De Fotovakschool in Rotterdam and a guest teacher at The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.
