A family background saturated with artists, the multitalented
multimedia artist Claire Oswalt seems to have been preordained to
the world of art and design. However, her path toward a career in art was
not necessarily a linear one. After moving from Austin, Texas to Los
Angeles to study medicine in university, she changed paths, always
believing she would be a writer. Oswalt did not find art until much
later, turning to art while she was waiting on agents and publishers
in the writing world. She grew up painting and drawing, and still
classifies herself as a painter, although she has worked in hand-made quilt
production and also in three-dimensional sculpture, citing process and
the pleasure of building an object by hand for her own enjoyment one
of the driving forces behind her practice. It is the process that she
loves — more than the product — learning, adapting, and implementing
the lessons learned during the creative process to move into her
next project.
