Château d’Yquem is a prestigious sweet wine, produced in the Sauternes region, 40km south east of the city of Bordeaux. The land’s extraordinary variety of soil is essential for the complexity of the wine. In the 15th Century the estate was owned by the Dukes of Aquitaine and the French Royal family, until it was bought by Leon de Sauvage in 1711. Its heritage spans four centuries in total. Today, the vineyards consists of 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc and are managed by Pierre Lurton. Although the estate has 126 hectares of land, only 100 produce Yquem. Alexandre de Lur Saluces, its previous manager, said ”You can only gain everything by accepting to lose everything’. Yields at Yquem are extremely low because the accent on quality and selection is so strong. Château d’Yquem is the only Sauternes wine rated “1er cru Supérieur.”
