A craftsman through and through, designer Brian Persico creates
beautiful and traditionally crafted custom furniture and objects, and is
well known for his minimalist approach to design. After graduating
from Pratt Institute in New York with a degree in Industrial Design,
Persico set out to produce simple and functional pieces that will stand
the test of time by making use of natural materials and drawing
inspiration from craft practices throughout history. The artist creates
bows and quivers — a somewhat lost art, yet a simple form that has
been around for centuries — from scratch. He sources and fells trees,
then dries out the wood, using primarily Osage Orange, which he
considers to be the best species of wood for bow-making. Each piece of
wood is carefully selected, first contemplating the unique bend that
must take shape in order for the bow to function properly. The tips and
nocks used are hand carved from naturally shed antlers that the artist
gathers from the Catskill Mountains. Each piece crafted by Persico is
one-of-a-kind and made, by hand, out of his studio in Red Hook.
